Child benefits in Brussels 2026 — amounts, Famiris & Iriscare

In Brussels, child benefits are regulated by Iriscare and paid by the funds (including Famiris, the public fund). Here are the 2026 amounts, the birth grant, indexation and how to go about it.

💡 Before reading this page

This article only covers the Brussels scheme. For how it works across Belgium (regionalized since 2019), read the complete child benefits guide. You can also compare with Wallonia and Flanders.

How the Brussels scheme works

Since the 6th state reform, child benefits are a regional competence. In Brussels, the system relies on two players you should not confuse:

🏛️
Iriscare — the regulator Iriscare is the bilingual public-interest body steering the "family benefits" branch in Brussels. It sets the rules and supervises the funds, but it does not pay you directly.
💶
The benefit funds — who pay The accredited funds are the ones that transfer the money to your account. Famiris is the Brussels public fund; alongside it, several private funds do exactly the same work. You freely choose your fund (see below).

Good news: the legal amount is the same regardless of the fund. Famiris or a private fund will pay you the same euro for the same situation. So the choice is mainly about service, not about the amount.

The 2026 amounts in Brussels

Here are the reference figures for 2026. The base amount is paid per child, every month, possibly topped up with supplements depending on your situation.

Benefit 2026 amount
Base amount (per child / month) ≈ €174.08
Birth grant — 1st child €1,395.02
Birth grant — subsequent children €634.10
Indexation +2% in March 2026

⚠️ Indicative 2026 amounts — check with your fund (Famiris or your private fund). The schemes are complex (child's age, rank, year of birth, supplements) and depend on your exact situation.

The birth grant is paid once per child. Its amount depends on the child's rank: it is clearly higher for the first (€1,395.02) than for the following ones (€634.10). For the full Belgian overview, see our page on the birth grant in Belgium.

The possible supplements

Beyond the base amount, Brussels provides several supplements. They do not all stack and depend on precise criteria, but here are the main ones to know:

💰
Social supplement Granted to families whose income does not exceed a certain ceiling. The more modest your income, the larger the supplement. The exact amount depends on your household composition and your income.
👤
Single-parent supplement If you raise your child(ren) alone, a specific supplement may be added, subject to an income condition. It recognizes the higher cost of a single-parent household.
Supplement for a child with a disability A supplement is provided for a child with a recognized condition. It is assessed based on the degree of autonomy and the impact on the family. The fund directs you to the necessary medical assessment.
🎒
Age supplements and back-to-school bonus The scheme also provides supplements linked to the child's age and support tied to the start of the school year. Ask your fund for the exact figures, as they vary by year of birth.

Choosing or changing fund

You are free to choose your child-benefit fund in Brussels. If you make no choice, you are automatically affiliated with Famiris, the public fund.

✅ Good to know

Since the legal amount is identical everywhere, you choose your fund on other criteria: quality of service, processing speed, online app, contact language. You can change fund: the change usually takes effect at the start of a quarter, with no loss of rights or money. Check with the target fund.

How to apply

1
From pregnancy, for the birth grant You can request the birth grant from around the 6th month of pregnancy. It can then be paid before delivery, helping to cover the first expenses. Contact the fund of your choice.
2
At birth, for the monthly amount Once the child is born and registered with the municipality, the fund opens the right to the monthly benefit. In many cases this starts automatically, but always check that your file is properly opened with a fund.
3
Provide the right documents Household composition, bank account details, and depending on the case a medical certificate (pregnancy, disability) or proof of income for the supplements. The fund tells you exactly what it needs.
4
Report any change of situation Move, new family composition, change of income or custody: notify your fund, as it may open or close a right to a supplement.
