Energy grants in Wallonia 2026: Primes Habitation and Rénopack

In 2026 Wallonia applies a transitional Primes Habitation regime until 30 September. Mandatory housing audit, 4 income categories, €50,000/home cap over 5 years, combinable with Rénopack 0%. On 1 October 2026, a new Rénopack/Rénoprêt system replaces everything.

The transitional regime until 30 September 2026

Until 30 September 2026, the Walloon Primes Habitation system operates under a specific transitional modality. After that, a completely new mechanism takes effect. For renovation projects to be completed this year, this transitional regime remains the applicable framework.

📋
Mandatory housing audit for most works Except for roof and attic insulation, the Primes Habitation require a previously drawn-up housing audit by an accredited auditor. Validity: 8 years.
💰
4 income categories determine the amount Category R1 (lowest incomes) gets the highest amount, R4 (highest incomes) the lowest. Categorization based on household taxable income.
📅
€50,000 cap per home over 5 years Sum of all grants received for the same home cannot exceed €50,000 over a 5-year period. Strategically important for those planning multiple projects.
🔄
Combinable with Rénopack 0% Grants can be directly integrated into a Rénopack application (0% public loan up to €60,000) to simplify pre-financing.

The 4 income categories explained

The granted amount depends directly on your category. Here is the simplified structure:

Category Who is targeted Grant multiplier
R1 Low incomes ×6 (maximum grant)
R2 Modest middle incomes ×4
R3 Mid-to-high incomes ×2
R4 High incomes ×1 (base grant)

The gap between R1 and R4 is therefore considerable: for the same works, an R1 household can receive up to six times more than an R4 household. This is the core of the Walloon redistribution system.

The Rénopack — a 0% loan up to €60,000

Beyond the Primes Habitation, Wallonia offers the Rénopack: a public loan at 0% (for low and modest-middle incomes) or at preferential rate, to finance renovation works.

Feature 2026 detail
Cap €60,000 per home
Rate 0% for R1-R2, preferential rate for R3-R4
Repayment period 30 years maximum
Manager SWCS (Société wallonne du crédit social) and SWL
Combinability Fully combinable with Primes Habitation, 6% VAT, federal deduction
✅ The ideal Walloon path

Audit (mandatory) → request Rénopack 0% by including the Primes Habitation → carry out works → request grants after works → grants directly repay the Rénopack. This is the most advantageous scenario of the current Walloon regime. To plan financing alongside a purchase, see approaching the bank for a mortgage.

How to combine aids in Wallonia

The Walloon system is deliberately combinable. The five levers to activate together:

1
Primes Habitation The Walloon regional grants themselves, based on your audit (except roof/attic).
2
6% VAT For homes over 10 years old. Extended to heat pumps even in new homes in 2026.
3
Federal tax reduction 30% for roof insulation, capped at approximately €3,290. Reintroduced on 1 January 2026 for 5 years.
4
Municipal grants Variable from one Walloon municipality to another. To verify with the municipal administration before the project.
5
Rénopack or Rénoprêt To finance the balance at 0% (Rénopack) or preferential rate (Rénoprêt).

The analysis order to follow: 1. audit (if required) → 2. estimate Primes Habitation → 3. request Rénopack including grants → 4. carry out works → 5. request grants after works. For comparison with the other regions, see Brussels and Flanders.

The turning point of 1 October 2026

From 1 October 2026, the transitional Primes Habitation regime ends. A new global system replaces it, whose main contours have already been announced by the Walloon government.

🆕 The new system after 1 October 2026

No more grants paid "post by post". The mechanism shifts to a logic of preferential-rate loans (expanded Rénopack and Rénoprêt) targeting climate goals and the global energy quality of homes.

  • Simplified audit, with a unified renovation plan
  • Rénopack cap possibly raised to €100,000
  • Grants progressively integrated into the loan (no separate request needed)
  • Faster processing times announced for 2027
⚠️ Strategy based on your timing

Works completed before 30 September 2026 → current system (transitional Primes Habitation). Works starting or completed after 1 October 2026 → new system. Don't hesitate to contact SPW Logement or schedule a housing audit to anticipate the transition.

Walloon pitfalls in 2026

⚠️
Requesting the housing audit after the works The audit must absolutely be drawn up before the works to unlock grants. An after-the-fact audit is not accepted.
⚠️
Forgetting to inquire about municipal grants Some Walloon municipalities (Liège, Namur, Mons) offer €200 to €1,000 extra for insulation or heating replacement. If you're saving in parallel for the purchase itself, see saving for a property purchase.
⚠️
Exceeding the 5-year €50,000 cap Once the cap is reached, no additional grant possible before the end of the rolling 5-year period. Plan your projects carefully. To situate the renovation within the broader buying journey, see our hub on buying or renting in Belgium.
