Energy grants in Brussels 2026: status and alternatives
The Renolution grants are suspended for 2025 and 2026 invoices. But other levers remain activatable: ECORENO loan, municipal grants, 6% VAT, tax deductions, Homegrade support. Here's how to renovate despite the suspension.
This article covers only the 2026 Brussels situation. For the Belgian overview (VAT, federal deductions, comparison of 3 regions), first read the complete Belgium guide.
Why is Renolution suspended?
Since January 2025, the Brussels government has not been formed in full office. Without a full-office government, no major budgetary decision can be taken — and the Renolution grant system depends each year on a budgetary order specifying amounts, conditions and ceilings.
Concrete consequences for Brussels residents:
For non-urgent works heavily dependent on grants (large insulation project for example), it can be strategic to wait for the new system if you can afford it. For urgent works (boiler failing, roof leak, deteriorated frames), don't wait: combine the alternative levers presented below, which remain significant.
The ECORENO loan — restarted in 2026
Good news: since 1 January 2026, the Brussels Region Housing Fund has restarted the ECORENO loan. It's the main alternative to the Renolution suspension.
| Feature | 2026 detail |
|---|---|
| Rate | 2.5% or 3.5% based on household income scale |
| Form | Consumer credit (max €25,000) or mortgage credit depending on amount |
| For whom | Owners, future owners and tenants of a home in one of the 19 Brussels municipalities |
| For what | All types of renovation works: insulation, frames, heating, ventilation, electricity, plumbing |
| Platform | Simulation and application on fonds.brussels |
Important Brussels feature: tenants also have access, which is rare. If you rent long-term and your landlord agrees to fund part of the works via agreement, ECORENO can cover the rest.
At 2.5% or 3.5%, ECORENO remains significantly more advantageous than a classic bank consumer loan (often 6 to 9% in 2026). Over 60 months for €20,000, the rate gap represents several thousand euros of saved interest.
Municipal grants
The 19 Brussels municipalities each offer their own additional grants, separate from the regional system. Amounts remain modest (€50 to €500) but combinable with other levers.
Examples of active municipal grants in 2026: rainwater tank (City of Brussels, Schaerbeek), green roof (Forest, Ixelles), façade insulation (Etterbeek), heat pump (some municipalities), individual composting. To verify with your municipal administration before works — conditions and amounts change yearly.
6% VAT and federal deduction
Two major federal levers remain fully activatable in 2026, regardless of the Renolution suspension:
For roof insulation in Brussels in 2026: 6% VAT + 30% tax reduction can cover 35 to 40% of total cost, even without going through Renolution. Add ECORENO loan for the balance, and the remaining cost becomes manageable even without regional grant.
Free support — Homegrade and Réseau Habitat
In Brussels, two organizations advise you for free on your renovation project, regardless of your income or status.
