Energy grants in Brussels 2026: status and alternatives

The Renolution grants are suspended for 2025 and 2026 invoices. But other levers remain activatable: ECORENO loan, municipal grants, 6% VAT, tax deductions, Homegrade support. Here's how to renovate despite the suspension.

This article covers only the 2026 Brussels situation. For the Belgian overview (VAT, federal deductions, comparison of 3 regions), first read the complete Belgium guide.

Why is Renolution suspended?

Since January 2025, the Brussels government has not been formed in full office. Without a full-office government, no major budgetary decision can be taken — and the Renolution grant system depends each year on a budgetary order specifying amounts, conditions and ceilings.

Concrete consequences for Brussels residents:

🚫
No grants paid for 2025 and 2026 final invoices State Secretary for Environment Ans Persoons confirmed that no grants will be allocated retroactively for these two years.
🚫
The 2024 invoice deadline has expired The legal 12-month deadline after the final invoice to submit a Renolution 2024 application is now closed. Pending files are processed, but no new applications can be filed.
📅
No official restart date The future system won't resume in its current form. The government announces a new system based on zero-rate loans, but its activation depends on the effective formation of a full-office Brussels government.
⚠️ Should you wait?

For non-urgent works heavily dependent on grants (large insulation project for example), it can be strategic to wait for the new system if you can afford it. For urgent works (boiler failing, roof leak, deteriorated frames), don't wait: combine the alternative levers presented below, which remain significant.

The ECORENO loan — restarted in 2026

Good news: since 1 January 2026, the Brussels Region Housing Fund has restarted the ECORENO loan. It's the main alternative to the Renolution suspension.

Feature 2026 detail
Rate 2.5% or 3.5% based on household income scale
Form Consumer credit (max €25,000) or mortgage credit depending on amount
For whom Owners, future owners and tenants of a home in one of the 19 Brussels municipalities
For what All types of renovation works: insulation, frames, heating, ventilation, electricity, plumbing
Platform Simulation and application on fonds.brussels

Important Brussels feature: tenants also have access, which is rare. If you rent long-term and your landlord agrees to fund part of the works via agreement, ECORENO can cover the rest.

✅ Why ECORENO remains attractive

At 2.5% or 3.5%, ECORENO remains significantly more advantageous than a classic bank consumer loan (often 6 to 9% in 2026). Over 60 months for €20,000, the rate gap represents several thousand euros of saved interest.

Municipal grants

The 19 Brussels municipalities each offer their own additional grants, separate from the regional system. Amounts remain modest (€50 to €500) but combinable with other levers.

Examples of active municipal grants in 2026: rainwater tank (City of Brussels, Schaerbeek), green roof (Forest, Ixelles), façade insulation (Etterbeek), heat pump (some municipalities), individual composting. To verify with your municipal administration before works — conditions and amounts change yearly.

6% VAT and federal deduction

Two major federal levers remain fully activatable in 2026, regardless of the Renolution suspension:

💰
6% VAT on renovation Applicable to works on homes over 10 years old (private use), performed by a registered contractor. Extended in 2026 to heat pumps even in new homes.
📉
Federal 30% tax reduction on roof insulation Reintroduced on 1 January 2026 for 5 years. 30% of expenditures, capped at approximately €3,290. Conditions: only and own home, capped surface.
✅ The combination that remains very attractive

For roof insulation in Brussels in 2026: 6% VAT + 30% tax reduction can cover 35 to 40% of total cost, even without going through Renolution. Add ECORENO loan for the balance, and the remaining cost becomes manageable even without regional grant.

Free support — Homegrade and Réseau Habitat

In Brussels, two organizations advise you for free on your renovation project, regardless of your income or status.

🏛️ Homegrade

Regional information and advice center for housing. They support you on home diagnosis, choice of priority works, ECORENO file preparation and administrative follow-up. Number 1810, free.

🏘️ Réseau Habitat

Network of Brussels associations specialized in helping residents — particularly those with modest incomes. Workshops, drop-in services and personalized support for tenants and owners.

📞 Energy facilitator

Free phone service (0800 85 775) for sharp technical questions: choice of heating system, sizing of a heat pump, insulation profitability calculation.

💼 Brussels Environment

The regional administration managing Renolution. Even if the program is frozen, their site remains the reference for the EPC certificate, regulation and upcoming evolutions.

Should you renovate in 2026 in Brussels?

The question is legitimate. Here's a reading grid in 4 practical cases:

1
Your heating breaks down Don't wait. A non-functional boiler = immediate comfort loss and risk of energy penalty. Go for a heat pump (extended 6% VAT) or a hybrid boiler. Combine ECORENO + 6% VAT.
2
You want to insulate your roof Go ahead. 30% tax reduction + 6% VAT remain available, and insulation is the most profitable investment in terms of energy return. No need to wait for Renolution to come back.
3
You want to replace your window frames If possible, wait for the new system. The Renolution frame grant represented €40 to €140/m². Without grant, 6% VAT and ECORENO don't fully compensate. Unless urgent (deteriorated glazing), you can take time.
4
You want to install photovoltaics Brussels offers alternative programs (solar panel rental from €200/year), separate from Renolution. To study before launching into a classic investment.

Pitfalls in Brussels in 2026

⚠️
Believing Renolution will be reactivated retroactively No official announcement supports this. The future system will be based on zero-rate loans, not direct grants like before. 2025-2026 invoices won't be covered.
⚠️
Forgetting municipal grants Modest individually, but combinable. Always verify with your municipality before works.
⚠️
Not choosing a registered contractor Without a registered contractor, no 6% VAT and no federal 30% deduction. Always verify the company number and registration.
